Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome.  This is a real F-A-Q page.  If you don’t see your question below, submit your question above, so we can add it to our list. Not only for you, but to help others as well.  For a prompt reply, include your phone# or e-mail.

01. How long will it take for us to see progress?

Parents—or teachers—usually spot positive changes between the 4th and 10th weeks.  Absolute reading rookies still finish between the 38th and 120th hours of tutelage.  Most children already know plenty.  Others learn fast.

02. Will Reading On Rails help with fluency or comprehension?

Rails raises fluency/speed in order to raise comprehension.  Raising speed raises comprehension (a lot) because children no longer pause to figure out “hard” words. Instead, they pause at punctuation marks, where they are supposed to pause.  When a child stops reading to “sound out” a word, he forgets what the author just said.

03. How do I know if my child needs tutoring?
Bristol Standards offers several ways to evaluate reading skills that you could use includinge:

For high self-esteem, your child should always be ahead of most kids in his class.

04. What are the costs and payment methods?

Costs, payment, and cancelation policy options are outlined on the Plans and Packages page.

05. How often does tutoring take place?

Most students enroll in tutoring sessions 2 to 4 times per week depending on their individual needs and their schedules.

You can explore our common packages on the Plans and Packages page.

06. How can I try the various programs? Are there any free trial periods?

There are many ways, including:

07. Is there any homework?

No.  Even without homework, progress is soon visible and rapid.  At present, close human supervision is essential for reading beginners.  Worksheets & computers can’t listen for mistakes, grade pronunciations, or counteract error patterns, so homework isn’t very practical.

08. Is my child old enough for Reading on Rails™?
Children who speak in complete sentences are usually ready.  That happens around five or six.  We can tell by working with your child, but assessing readiness can take several sessions.  The first two sessions are free anyway and the next two come with a 100% money back guarantee.  A school will start reading instruction whether your child is ready or not, so we recommend signing up for Reading Insurance if he or she isn’t quite ready.
09. Do you work with Adults?

Yes.  Even if an adult can’t read at all now, he or she can almost certainly become a reader.  Most adults with reading issues started out as embarrassed children in frustrating and baffling reading programs.  Reading on Rails is 6 to 8 times better than those old reading programs, so the odds of success are very good.  All adult students are eligible for our outcome guarantee:  Adults who aren’t reading well by the 200th hour of tutoring get the next 30 sessions for free

10. What is your cancellation policy?

To be fair to both tutors and clients, we have a variety of cancellation policies worked into our packages.  You just pick the one that fits your situation best.  Most parents want to “roll over” missed sessions. To find out more, visit Plans & Packages.
